now is the thread that connects us
invisible filament sewn tight with a double knot
to hold it secure
reach across the ether
where it binds you, too
we chose this thread
unknowing, innocent
of all the world that we would create
would we have reached out
if we knew then what we know now?
i like to think
the route would have remained the same
no shortcuts
that knowledge would have changed nothing
but hindsight has that effect too
of dulling the pain until it’s just a faint tug on the thread
when at the time it was wound so tight
it became a straightjacket
if memory were as raw as experience
women would only birth once, then be done
no love affairs, no family, we would all live alone
with our five cats
the blurring of memory
is a gift that yesterday gives to now
