fireflies don’t live here anymore
and i miss them
something so improbable
jolted alive at twilight’s last stand
sparks the wild imagination
teases the analytic mind
to let go and dream of endless flight
to walk in a nighttime arbor
and be greeted by fireflies
is to be invited to dance with faeries
to leap and to fly
to shuck my robes and plunge
goosefleshed and shivering from cold and thrill
into the pools of summer night
how i miss those solemn childhood rites
when i’d wish upon the firefly’s light
