cliff with green moss slick from ocean spray
boulders tossed by giants, covered in razor-sharp mussels
that spend their lives clinging to the rough edges
carved from a million years of pulsing force
she demands ongoing expansion
continents are an inconvenience
on her eternal quest
to circle beyond the expanses of land
she knows no mortal enemy
fire cannot consume her in its fiery glow
but turns to sputtering embers at her shore
the wind is her dear friend
creating surges of energy, sets of waves
that crash into the sand devouring the land
even birds, diving and dancing through her peaks
mistake the power of her swirling shallows
and lie fallen, crushed upon the beach
she will pull the bird from the air
the rock from the shore
flame from the fire
she will caress, she will pound, will take as she pleases
and leave the rest for tomorrow
she has all the time the world has to offer
but even she must wait, impatiently each day
for the moment her lover the sun
returns from the sky to sink into her depths
