i’ve been hanging out in the darkroom for a while… studying the 19th century print process of carbon printing for several years with my mentor charles berger, who’s the father of the modern carbon print process and inventor of the polycolor heliochrome. with heliochrome, i use the material of the traditional carbon print process in a unique way; instead of making single or multi-color pigment layers on the final print, i combine multiple colors into a single layer. with unique gestural effects, the emulsion itself becomes an expression of the final image. this technique creates unique opportunities for experimentation that the traditional carbon process does not provide.

in my project liminal space: where the conscious and unconscious meet to dance, i created a fine art portrait series of montages that are based on my own dreams and the dreams of my ‘archetypal collaborators’. the initial images began with the woman within dream panoramas that were created using photo montage. as i progressed with the project, i began to strip away the literal dream environments, and created a liminal space using the polycolor heliochrome process to introduce elements of chaos and uncertainty, both into to process and the final print. the women have moved out of depiction of dreams and into the dream space.
